“Kalves Skuja” cup returns to Āgenskalns

At the end of February, we went to Jelgava to participate in the concert "Polka pilī" (Polka in the Castle) as well as the annual competition"Kalves Skuja", which was organized by our dance friends TDA "Kalve".

This year, instead of the usual bowling tournament, orienteering games were held at the Latvian University of Biosciences and Technology. For two hours, we tested not only our creativity and intuition, but also our knowledge and abilities in recognizing animal footprints and skeletal parts, while completing various tasks and activities at faculty stations.

It turned out that this not-so-easy challenge was within our reach, as we came in first place in the orienteering competition and returned to Āgenskalns with the “Kalves Skujas” cup!

In the evening together with six other groups we delighted the audience at the traditional friendship concert “Polka pilī”. In addition to the mandatory repertoire, the groups also performed their favorite dances. At the concert, we had the opportunity to show Diāna Gavares’ dance “Ai, zaļā līdaciņa” (Oh, green pike) to a wider audience for the first time.

And then the ball “We Met in February” – as a tribute to Raimonds Pauls on his 90th birthday. That is why the ball performances were prepared, inspired by the maestro’s work.

We had tried our best and even created a medley – we started with the movements of the Ačkups guys’ favorite “Karbunkuls”, followed by “Trīs lietas” (Three things) with real tears, songs and beer (reference to the lyrics), we also thoroughly washed ourselves in the “Somu pirts” (Finnish sauna), until, finally, we came to “Genoveva”, in which the usual dance steps intertwined with modern and bold hip movements. And, of course, it wouldn’t be “Ačkups” if we didn’t also surprise with spectacular and gorgeous costumes.

We spun and whirled on the dance floor accompanied by the band “Krustojums”. On the way home, the “Kalves Skujas” cup also had its place on the bus. But now it has taken pride of place in our collective’s premises, waiting for next year and a meeting at Jelgava Castle.

Thank you to our dance friends at TDA “Kalve” for the carefully, interestingly and attractively organized day! We look forward to seeing you at our charity concert “Kas te rīb?”
